I think I just found something to do on the computer when I'm busy at work looking busy. :-P
I took Freud class in college (using Freud's theories to analyze literature) and there was a lot in it about expected norms in storytelling and how setting them on their ear throw's the reader/listener/watcher and makes for better storytelling. Especially when you're trying to scare people/creep people out.

The subject of cliches came up on another writer's website I'm a member of, and I've been thinking about it the past few days.

Cliches, if done well, can be thoroughly entertaining. Certainly the idea of star-crossed lovers, a la Romeo and Juliet, has been done and done again throughout the centuries (even Shakespeare borrowed the idea from a Greek myth), its latest incarnation being Twilight. The popularity of the Twilight series shows that star-crossed lovers are still beloved by readers and moviegoers, so it's a cliche presented in a form that works.
