Snark Is A Form Of Optimism, Right?
It’s been the sort of morning where PMS hangs on the horizon. I’ll just let you think about that and thank God you’re not living with me. Heh. The kids are oblivious, but the UnSullen, after shoving a cup of coffee into my hands, has found other things to do at a distance from me.
Wise, wise kid.
Let’s see…there’s this excellent post by Maggie Stiefvater (whose newest, Shiver, is now out, by the way) about How To Write A Novel. It is boiled down to: 1. Decide to do it and then 2. Put your ass in the chair and do it. She does go into more detail, but that’s what it, at bottom, is.
There are an amazing number of people who call themselves writers and, to put it simply, don’t effing write. Are there painters who don’t paint and musicians who don’t play music, too? I don’t know, I’m neither painter nor musician.
Moving on…here’s CE Murphy talking about healthcare. It makes me want to move to a saner country. I love America. I just hate the xenophobic idiots who are being manipulated into “teabagging” and other such stunts. There seem to be a lot of them, or maybe it’s just that they’re loud and nutty.
Hopefully these tactics by the right will cause a groundswell of opposition…but people are scared, and Republican wingnuts have always been better at appealing to fear. It’s where they live, and sanity and rationality don’t make much of a dent in this kind of hysteria.
Those darn cultural third rails.
*sigh*
I know they say optimistic women live longer. But really…I’m having a tough time with it today.
The Comics Curmudgeon has gotten me addicted to (of all things) Mary Worth. The current storyline, with a woman dealing with her emotionally distant husband by visiting Mary and reconnecting with an old flame who is now a skeezy (implied) porno-watching greaseball is making me want to laugh maniacally and projectile-hurl my cookies at the same time. Because, you know, couldn’t this woman DIVORCE HER IDIOT HUSBAND (who is only around one weekend of the month anyway) AND FIND A FULFILLING CAREER OF HER OWN?
But that’s not how Mary rolls. And the CC commentary is just priceless.
There. That’s as close to optimistic as I’m getting today: snark. It will have to do.

sometimes its sheer spite that gets a person through the day.

Actually, yes, there’s a name for writers who don’t write and find every excuse they can not to write. They’re called “assistant managers at Borders”.

Or perhaps, L.S., you’re so preposterously moonbat Leftist and egalitarian that you simply don’t belong in the USA. Your works are enjoyable, but one does need to filter out the drivel that you pointedly spatter here and there. When you knock it off, I might actually buy your books rather than read them at Borders and return them to the shelf.

Writers who don’t write: critics.
Musicians who don’t perform: conductors.
Civil servants who don’t think: congress.
If you enjoy that cartoon, may I suggest “Neurotically Yours”? It takes some getting used to, but the social commentary is priceless. Best enjoyed in the absence of children, lest the vocabulary be repeated.
Ta ta.

@Adam: I get the sentiment that if you want to do something just do it, but I’ve never liked that particular line of thinking – it’s very much “those who can’t, teach!” which is awfully simplistic and denigrating of teachers, don’t you think? I know it’s fun to pick on critics and congresspeople and the like but isn’t it just a little simplistic? Critics, for example, are often creators as well, people who are deeply passionate about their art and very often do more to publicize said art form than most individual artists. Everyone has a part to play, after all.

What a lovely thief that BCC is, smearing up books not purchased. Along with “Leftist” and “egalitarian”, BCC also doesn’t understand what “retail store” means. I’m sure BCC is very busy working on that cure for pancreatic cancer and just doesn’t have time for things like libraries — or perhaps can’t qualify for a card.

The good old USA could use more citizens who think and express their opinions effectively and aren’t afraid to face the grim reality of the world, and less people who cry moonbat while trolling the blogs of authors they profess to dislike.
