Hi Kaigou,

It’s like opening up a can of worms, ennit. I will say that I was relieved to find Detective Chen very much a product of his culture, instead of falsely “enlightened” with values that didn’t fit in.

The Detective Chen series is my new favorite in urban fantasy — for once, someone who doesn’t think the world revolves around (or at least only contains) Anglo-Saxon folklore. It’s phenomenal, and the deeper you get into the series, the more diverse and fantastical and awesome it becomes. Now, if only I could find more series like this one, because when I go begging for something to read in the urban SFF world, this is exactly what really swallows me whole.

(I remain baffled as to why it’s marketed as science fiction, and not urban fantasy. Frankly, I suspect there’s some kind of political statement being made in there, like the notion that if it were marked as ‘urban fantasy’ we’d expect chick-with-gun as protag, or maybe that we’d expect vampires, or something. I’m not sure. But the series has all the trappings of UF, yet it’s SF. Ideas? Comments? Ruminations?)
