Nor I can&#039;t for the life of me view a story/novel as a three dimensional structure, though I&#039;ve heard of other writers seeing it like that. So either my mind is not wired that way or I simply haven&#039;t reached that stage yet.

But there are definitely novels to which I cannot find any emotional connection even though there are lots of potentially exciting things happening. One example would be the works of a prominent SF author whose name keeps popping up on awards shortlist, even though his characters behave like pawns on a chessboard with no emotional veracity whatsoever.</description>
