Another good way to get rid of stuff is to check out your local Freecycle group. I managed to get rid of \\\ ahem I mean give away an old patio set in about 10 seconds flat with backups in case the first person who claimed it didn't show up! I've also got rid of a box of back issues of old cooking magazines that I couldn't bring myself to just throw away, etc. It's amazing.
