Yes. YES. *YES*

I have a writer friend who told me "I hate hurting my characters." We were online, so she couldn't see my mouth drop open and moths and birds and Batman fly in there, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Am I a bad person, Lilith, because I like breaking my characters so I can fix them? Or the other way around? I have to admit it . . . I love a scene that really tears a character apart, because how can we tell what he's made of unless he's in pieces?

I follow this theory as well. I put my characters through hell, and not just for the hell of it mind you. I believe in consequences, and I can't have my characters running around, getting themselves in a out of dangerous situations, without getting hurt, wounded, or killed. It just wouldn't be "believable. Like an 80's action flick where the bad guys have the worst aim in the world, and the good guy is a world champion marksman.

Nice :)

..I wonder if, conversely, the character that *has* been dealt the man with the gun is shattered by kindness instead..?

I firmly believe one must mistreat one’s characters. Smack them around. Up the ante, dish out some injury.

I've always followed that theory. In the book I just finished writing, I had my main character get her guts ripped out by the zombie that used to be one of her best friends. It was fun.
