Back soon…

I’ve finished the first pass of revisions for SA 2, and now I’m embarking on the second, more fine-tooth-comb pass. So, erm, I’ll be back in a bit.

Last night I took the Princess (who wishes to be referred to as Astronomy Girl from here on out) to see Coraline. She absolutely loved it, and if she is Good (and when is she not? Both my kids are very, very Good) I will buy her the book and maybe introduce her to some other Gaiman. (Suggestions welcome. My favorite is American Gods, but I’m told I’m in a minority.) I was pleasantly surprised to find that the movie didn’t ask adults to check their brains at the door, and of course it’s almost impossible to mess up such wonderful work as Gaiman does.

Okay. I’m outie. Hacking at the jungle of prose…

I loved Neverwhere, but I haven’t read as much Gaiman as I’d like. No idea how old Astronomy Girl is or if it matters though.

Princess of the Pleiadies? Siris Grrl?

Gaiman has a couple of YA books you can start her on, working up to American Gods. Maybe small does of Pratchett too.

I loved Neverwhere, too. Down the rabbit hole, with such a fun cast of odd characters. And a girl named Door! =)

Stardust perhaps? Or the Graveyard Book. Or Good Omens seeing as some of the protagonists are kids but not sure how old she is…

I’d be in favour of Neverwhere or Stardust. (And if you can find a DVD of the tv production of Neverwhere, so much the better!)

American Gods isn’t YA, that’s all. Try her on Neverwhere or Graveyard or smoke & Mirrors.

Another vote for American Gods and Neverwhere both. Definitely my Gaiman favorites. Haven’t read Graveyard yet, though. Stop mentioning all my favorite authors; I have other things to do than comment on blogs ;)

American Gods is my favorite by far, but I bet Astronomy Girl would love Stardust. It’s such a quick fun read.

I loved Good Omens. It is really, really funny. Stardust is great too :)

American Gods is a jewel of a story; I loved it! If you haven’t read Anasi Boys (remember Anasi from AG?) you would probably enjoy it as well. For your Astronomy Girl I’d say Neverwhere. My daughter read it when she was 15 and has been a confirmed Gaiman fan since. The Graveyard Book is another entertaining and thoughtful story.

I also strongly recommend Neverwhere. American Gods would have to be your call as Mom and how much “mature” material you want Astronomy Girl to read just yet. And if she likes graphic novels there’s always the Sandman series, although again I would say look them over before handing them off to her as some of the images can be disturbing.

Good Omens is great. Really funny. I also don’t think it has anything too graphic or disturbing in it.

Stardust is a great book, but a bit unlike his other work.

I love all his comics. Beyond Sandman, he did a stories called Black Orchid, the Books of Magic, and I’m blanking on the others. I actually like his comic works better than his novels.
