Random!

Because it’s already 3:30PM and I have no clue what I’m supposed to be doing today.

* Threw out 5.5K of the teen vampire story and started from scratch. The problem was the first version wanted to be a novel. No dice. Got a word limit. Gotta cut down, pare it to the bone, got to do this in three acts. Compress everything. (Can you tell I’m spinning my wheels?)

* A shout out to magazine writer extraordinaire Katrina Baxter, who has a shiny new website, and my good friend Justin Gustainis, whose new Quincey Morris book, Evil Ways, is out! I love Justin’s work, and it’s pretty-much-urban fantasy with a male protagonist. (*ebil twinkle in eye*) Srsly, I completely effing love Quincey, and books make such lovely holiday presents. Hint, hint. If you’re looking for good, smart occult fiction, throw a little love Quincey’s way! (I finally got my copy of the book not too long ago. Hee!)

* About the recent folderol: thanks for the comments! (And thank you to everyone who is obeying the rules of non-troll Internet chatter. Bless you!) Lots of people talking is good, whether they agree with my li’l ol’ opinion or not. At least people are talking about these issues. And frankly I don’t expect my analysis to be the only one or the best one. It’s just mine. And I knew it wouldn’t be popular, especially since I like my humor dry and my communication blunt.

* No, I’m not going to respond personally to the, ahem, more inflammatory and insulting takes on what I wrote. It’s like responding personally to reviews–a fool’s game sooner or later. (But that’s another blog post.) I have read a few of the responses to the essay in question, and I think the range of responses is marvelously interesting. If people are talking and thinking about these issues, I’m happy and it’s awesome. Whether it’s pillory or praise for me personally, in the end all I care about is the dialogue. If I sparked a bit o’ honest dialogue, huzzah! The Internet is wide and has a short attention span, in ten seconds we’ll all have moved on, but some small bit of the discussion may continue to resonate and may change an attitude or spark further thought. It’s all a writer can hope for. That being said…

* …I should state that I most emphatically did not mean the anonymous responses to my original Angry Chicks In Leather post were all trolls. Mea culpa! Some of the anonymous posters had really good points given in an adult and reasonable manner. To them goes out the following three sentences: Sorry about that, guys–I did not mean to plaster the troll label on you with an inappropriate slash between anonymous and troll. I could have stated that better. My apologies.

* Nuff said. About the whole thing. For a while. I think.

* Moving on! I’m thinking about tomorrow’s Friday Writing Post being about reviews. If there’s a topic you’d like me to approach, go ahead and list it in the comments. I can’t get around to every subject, but I might do a grab-bag if there’s a plethora of interesting questions, or go in-depth on one. (Translation: my brain is fried after throwing out an entire frocking short story and starting over. So, um, a little help on choosing a subject would be welcome.)

And that’s all she wrote for Thursday, folks. Stay warm and dry, be careful on the roads, and don’t swim for a half hour after eating. Or something.

Over and out.

I’d be interested on your take on making a story deeper. I’ve finally wrangled the craft beast to the point I am finishing novels (two in 2008, as soon as I write that blasted climax… *wink*) consistently, and the first one I subbed got positive feedback. But while I have now shown myself I can write an entertaining and coherent book, I am of course not satisfied. If I’m going to play the publishing game, I want to take it to the next level. I want depth, breadth, meaning. Got anything for me? :)
