Spare Me, Don’t Spare Me…Anything

Trouble me, disturb me with all your cares and your worries.
Trouble me on the days when you feel spent.
Why let your shoulders bend underneath this burden
when my back is sturdy and strong?
Trouble me.

Yup, I’ve got 10000 Maniacs running through my head. Of course the Were in the current series–Saul Dustcircle–is gone in this particular book, but his presence is threaded throughout. Trouble Me is kind of “his” song. Absent characters inform a story as much as present ones sometimes.

Speaking of characters, Fantasy Book Critic is giving away an Orbit prize pack, and yours truly is part of it. I think you get a chance to win all three currently-released Valentine books. Which is just all flavors of awesome.

I finally got some sleep last night–the heat has pretty much broken at night, and the UnSullen One cracked my back before I went to bed. Running on empty sometimes wins over insomnia, in that the body shuts down to take its rest no matter what the mind thinks.

Today I’m flipping back and forth between Kismet and the space opera. I really enjoy the space opera, it’s a lot of fun. My take on Captain Tightpants, I guess–now there was a conflicted hero I could really sink my teeth into. It helps that Nathan Fillion is just so gosh-darned cute. Does it make me unutterably weird if I just want to touch his nose once before I die?

If I sound distracted, you’re right. I’m halfway into two books now, and whatever parts of me that might be left over are concerned with running after/feeding the Little People. It feels like a gathering storm, all the work I have to do. When a fire gets lit under a story I always get this lightheaded feeling before I adjust to the lower oxygen level and aim for the stars.

So. Off I go. *sketches a brief salute* It’s good to be back, sir.
