Another Night Bites The Dust

Yup, insomniac again. Everything should be okay…except it’s not. Can’t sleep. Head’s pounding. Back is aching. Even my metaphysics are sore. And honey, when that happens, ain’t nobody happy.

There are some good things. Pretty much every creature I’m responsible for is sleeping soundly. The cats are curled up next to me, one of them purring. The kids are sacked out, and the DHM is snoring gently. The world is quiet, eerily quiet, the stillness that means the tide hasn’t shifted yet. I give it about twenty minutes before it stops feeling like night and starts feeling like the shoals of early morning. The witching hour isn’t midnight–it’s this liminal space on the cusp, where the deep breath of this slice of the world sleeping is about to exhale.

Brenda Griffith very sweetly tagged me with a meme and popped over to my blog to let me know. So in the interest of not boring you with my insomnia, here’s Seven Very Random Things About Lili.

1. Almonds are my favorite nuts. Except for Candy and Sarah of Smart Bitches, and the Selkie, of course.

2. The word “cake” always sounds very dry to me.

3. Mahler’s Fourth is, in my opinion, excellent insomnia music.

4. When I was twelve I decided that if I could just look closely enough, I could find something beautiful about everything I saw. I still think so.

5. Green is my favorite color, silk my favorite fabric, silver my favorite metal (can’t wear gold) and my favorite tree is the birch.

6. I have a chunk of bloodstone bigger than my head under my writing chair.

7. My sisters and I can find anything in each others’ kitchens. Always. World without end, amen.

Extra credit: I am frightened of the phone. Like, actually physically terrified. Along with being unreasonably afraid of crowds. It’s why I prefer working at home and email. I’m sure I will be the crazy cat lady any day now.

I know this is a meme and I should tag people, but I’m just not the tagging type. So…if you like it and want to share the randomness, feel free, and I’m sure that will count.

Dawn is supposed to be coming soon. Each time it occurs after a night like this I’m grateful, and I renew my faith in the Divine. Yet another quirk of my personality, I’m sure. Since the advent of dawn is not dependent upon my gratefulness or upon the gods, but rather on the sheer idiot persistence of rotation and photosynthesis supporting the sentience to witness it, and even the latter is nonessential.

Good morning, world. At least, I hope it will be one.
