Bag of Random Things

First, a quote from Robertson Davies.

To be a book-collector is to combine the worst characteristics of a dope fiend with those of a miser.

I’ve already sent this to every book person I know. I expect agreement on all fronts.

Question: How do you get a half-demon Necromance out of the sea and into a burning city to find and rescue her Fallen?

Answer: Any bloody way the Muse will let you.

Congratulations to the winners of the Watcher and Valentine Trivia contests. I just sent out the email winner notifications. I know I should have done it yesterday, but after the weekend I had I needed some down time.

I killed zombies on a computer screen to relax yesterday. It made me actually chortle with glee.

I went for a long walk last night with my IPod. The moon was full and hanging in a lace-cloud sky, drifting rudderless. The air was cold and like champagne to the back of the throat; but it wasn’t freezing just yet.

I wasn’t thinking about it, but in the trenchcoat and boots I might look a bit imposing. There was a kid skating in the church parking lot who gave me several odd looks, as if he thought I was up to no good. And an older man walking his pit bull pulled his dog aside and glared at me as I passed. The perils of dressing like I want to, I suppose. But shouldn’t the Ravenclaw scarf have told him I was harmless, being a scholar and a geek?

The swings creaked invitingly at the playground, so I took them up on it, singing softly to myself in French as I went back and forth, pointing my toes and bending my knees as I whistled back through the air. The moon seemed to approve.

This morning I told the DHM I was going to be a hermit for a while, since I need to write. He says in honest bafflement, “More of a hermit than usual?”

Jeez. “Well, I’ve just been outwardly directed for a while, and now I need to be inwardly directed.”

“Oh. Yeah, I guess you’re right,” he says loyally. Bless his pointy little head.

It’s Tuesday. It’s cloudy and cool, and the kids are watching Sesame Street. I have a third of a cup of coffee to finish and some writing to do.

Life is good.
