Probably Safest

autumn falls... I actually saw my breath in a few places during my morning run. It’s official, autumn is here. Some of the trees have dropped all their leaves–the 90F days stressed them, and the sudden drop in overnight temperatures probably sent them into fits of the screaming meemies. It even smells like fall, the leaves dry and spicy before the rains set in and turn the scent to sludge.

The second Steelflower book continues apace. I’m finding my way, with a few stops and starts, to the assassination attempt that will kick everything off. I almost have a bit prepared for Patreon folks. Very soon now. The one plot strand I thought was going to be prevalent has instead decided to submerge, so I need to find out why but Kaia isn’t talking yet. Perhaps she can’t even admit certain things to herself.

I also had a project I was really excited about–my homage to the Strugatskys’ Roadside Picnic and Tarkovsky’s Stalker, both of which I love with a deep passion. Unfortunately, someone’s doing a TV series for the former, and that means I’m going to put it off. It’s probably safest.

Instead, I think I’m going to work on Marked. I wasn’t able to use my original idea for Gallow’s tattoos, because he was very definite that sidhe markings did not leave in the way I thought, so I had to can that idea, but I put it in the compost pile and when I looked back, this whole other story had grown out of it. So…we’ll see where that takes me.

Anyway, enough talk. It’s time for the daily Latin lesson, and then submerging into Kaia’s world again. I’d forgotten how physically exhausting being a mercenary is, Kaia’s a giant collection of scars and aches by now. No wonder she’s got such a foul temper, I would too if I was dealing with that sort of chronic pain and loss of solitude.

Last but not least, I’m running out of places to bury dead rodents. But that’s a story for another day…
